Compliance Standards
Is your Certificate of Compliance still compliant?

New regulations are in place to give the property owner a low risk installation with as little damage as possible when faults arise due to wear and tear.
An installation is now considered complete when it has all the documentation in place including the safety reports by the Statutory Competent Person for your installation.
Just to have a licensed electrician in your service is not sufficient because by law the full responsibility is only dealt with properly when the electrical installation`s design and specification, drawings, certificates of compliance and the final safety report by the Statutory Competent Person is also in place. Otherwise the CEO or his delegated manager will takes responsibility in the case of a fatal or serious electrical accident or insurance claim for a factory burned down due to electrical fault.
Regulations also specify minimum protection for an electrical installation is to have over- voltage, under-voltage, over-current, phase loss, arc protection and over temperature protection.
The implementation of the OHS act of 1993 and SANS 10142-1 and 2 and quite a few other regulations not only protects people and property, it also ensures a good quality installation with little or no hassles and reduced risk to your equipment. The purpose is a quality installation with the least amount of downtime and limited loss in fault situations.
In Europe world-class installations are considered very important when a manufacturer wishes to become a supplier to a huge distributor because of the advantages of limited downtime, limited loss during fault situations. The amount of repair and maintenance and the risks in losing motors and switchgear is very much unknown and unmanaged in many factories in South Africa, mostly because of ignorance.
Efficient Electrical Energy Management offers clients an onsite workshop to become informed regarding the OHS act and SANS 10142-1 regulations and it`s relevance to electrical installation safety management. To ensure that well informed and calculated risk management decisions are being made.
We have taken over the responsibility of Statutory Competent Person for other clients and they are already reaping the benefits of this and saving money because of much better decision making regarding upgrades of electrical installations, planned maintenance and protection of equipment and motors.

The Future of Power Quality
16/September/2009 08:00
In Europe legislation is very firm about harmonics. No manufacturer is allowed to sell equipment which generates harmonics above a predetermined safe level and every user is responsible and accountable to make sure no harmonic contamination is added to the grid as a result of their equipment and practices.
South Africa seems to have the legislation in place but not the application. The penalty will either hit us in the very near future or our children will have pay for it.
Why do I send you this article?
Before buying machines or equipment with some electronic control, contact Efficient Electrical Energy Management and let`s discuss the harmonic distortion potential
The supplier of that equipment is obliged to give you the specifications which shows the harmonic distortion levels
You may have losses and problems with repairs and maintenance which is costing a lot in terms of profit lost and expenses, not knowing that harmonics is the culprit
Harmonics filtering is very expensive and in many cases, Efficient Electrical Energy Management can mostly solve the problem without using harmonic filters and at a much lower cost as well
Start measuring power quality parameters such as harmonics, all 3 phases volts amps kvar, kw and log it, so that you have the information at hand for expert analysis. The cost of measuring by external experts is huge and it does not solve the problem because machines and equipment changes all the time and since you also receive harmonic contamination from the neighboring factories or businesses
Make power quality monthly reporting, part of your management report. This is something which management can use and understand once they are informed, you do not need to be an electrician or engineer to understand and use this information
Contact Cobus Verster to discuss your power quality needs and risks and how to address the risks.
Yours sincerely,
Cobus Verster.
